Excerpt:
As I move to the door, Bo says, “Hold it open for me.” I glance back, surprised to see him carrying three large restaurant to-go bags. When I raise my eyes to his, he smiles. “Looks like we prepared far more than we needed tonight.”
He knows. Blinking against the rising tears, I turn away and wipe my eyes. Though I am more grateful than I can say, shame fills me again. I feel like a beggar. Actually, I am.
“Thank you,” I murmur as we reach my car. When I open the back door, he places the bags on the seat. Then, turning to me, he takes my hand in his, startling me.
“Don’t ever feel ashamed, Rue. You are devoted to my aunt’s care, and you are humble enough to take help when it is offered until things get better. There is no shame in that.” He touches my quivering chin. “There is no shame in that.”
